Indigenous self-governance

The Quebec Native Friendship Centre Movement represents a unique space for expression and action for First Nations and Inuit living in urban areas. This freedom to act enables innovation and growth in alignment with Indigenous needs and traditions. As apolitical organizations, the Native Friendship Centres lead independent community-based initiatives rooted in lived realities and Indigenous knowledge.

Driven by its vision of autonomy, the Movement recreates spaces where the rules are by and for Indigenous people. By emphasizing its distinct model of governance, the Movement strengthens its ability to set its own standards, thereby reflecting its aspirations and amplifying the impact of its actions for present and future generations.

Vibrant, well-established and representative governance

Inclusive and aligned with the needs of Indigenous populations, our governance model draws on active citizen participation, leadership and community mobilization. It builds on the representation, local roots and expertise of the members of the Quebec Native Friendship Centre Movement, while affirming the legitimacy of autonomous Indigenous governance in urban environments. Made up of passionate members from across the Movement, our board of directors embodies this vision through their commitment and diversity.

Beyond the strategic role it plays, this approach to governance provides a foundational framework that enables First Nations and Inuit members to assert themselves in an urban environment by fostering their community engagement, identity affirmation and contribution to social cohesion.
